MOMBASA COUNTY, KENYA — Mombasa residents are set to benefit from a major urban transformation after President William Samoei Ruto unveiled a KSh 31 billion affordable housing programme aimed at constructing 10,000 housing units across the county.

Speaking during a development tour in Mvita Constituency, President Ruto said the investment is part of the government’s broader commitment to dignified, inclusive, and sustainable urban development while addressing the growing demand for decent housing.

“We are investing KSh 31 billion in the construction of 10,000 affordable housing units in Mombasa County, reaffirming our commitment to dignified and inclusive urban development for residents,” President Ruto said.

The Head of State made the announcement while laying the foundation stone for the Makupa Modern Market and an accompanying Affordable Housing Project, both expected to significantly improve livelihoods and economic opportunities in the area.

The Makupa Modern Market, which will cost approximately KSh 600 million, is expected to provide traders with a modern and organized business environment, helping improve trade and ease congestion in the city.

President Ruto noted that the affordable housing programme is not only designed to reduce the housing shortage but also create employment opportunities for thousands of young people through construction and related industries.

He emphasized that the government is implementing transformative projects across the country to uplift communities, improve infrastructure, and secure better living conditions for wananchi.

“Across the country, we are implementing transformative projects that uplift communities, expand opportunity, and secure a better future for all,” the President added.

The Mombasa initiative forms part of the government’s flagship Affordable Housing Programme, which seeks to expand access to quality housing, modernize urban centres, and stimulate economic growth through large-scale infrastructure investment.
