NAIROBI, KENYA — The government has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, a public holiday to mark the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations across the country.

The announcement was made through a Kenya Gazette Special Issue, with the declaration issued by Kipchumba Murkomen in his capacity as Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration.

According to the gazette notice, the holiday has been declared under Section 3 (1) of the Public Holidays Act (Cap. 110), allowing Muslims and Kenyans at large to observe one of the most significant religious celebrations in the Islamic calendar.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command before divine intervention provided an alternative sacrifice. The day is marked by prayers, charity, family gatherings, and the sharing of meals among Muslim faithful.

The declaration means government offices, schools, and most businesses will remain closed on Wednesday as the country joins the Muslim community in observing the annual religious event.
