Met Department Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert as Nairobi Faces Flood Risk

By Joshua Otieno | April 27, 2026

NAIROBI, KENYA — The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an urgent weather advisory warning of intensified rainfall across the country, with Nairobi among the areas most at risk of flooding.

The advisory, which remains in effect through May 1, cautions that rainfall is expected to exceed 20mm within 24-hour periods, with peak storm activity projected between Sunday and Tuesday.

The warning follows a series of intense afternoon downpours that have already disrupted normal operations in the capital. Parts of Nairobi experienced heavy traffic congestion after sudden thunderstorms flooded roads and reduced visibility.

Forecasters have identified the Highlands East of the Rift Valley—including Nairobi—as high-risk zones for flash floods due to rapid surface runoff and poor drainage systems in some areas.

“Residents are urged to be on high alert. Localized flooding is likely in low-lying areas, and motorists should prepare for significantly reduced visibility and slippery road conditions,” the department said in a statement.

Authorities have also warned of additional hazards accompanying the storms, including strong winds and frequent lightning, which could pose danger to both pedestrians and motorists.

Disaster management teams are advising residents to seek shelter in safe structures during storms, avoid standing under trees, and refrain from attempting to cross flooded roads. Areas such as South C and sections of Thika Superhighway have been highlighted as particularly vulnerable during heavy rainfall.

The advisory extends beyond Nairobi, signaling that the long rains season is intensifying across several regions of the country. Public works departments have been urged to clear blocked drainage systems to reduce the risk of flooding.

Officials continue to encourage the public to monitor updates from official channels as the weather system develops, with the coming days expected to bring sustained rainfall and potential disruptions.
