Gor Mahia FC restored their dominance at the top of the Kenyan Premier League table after edging out Shabana FC 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at the Nyayo National Stadium.
The record champions were forced to dig deep for the win in a tightly contested match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
Gor Mahia took the lead in the 22nd minute through Jackson Dwang who finished off a well worked move to give the hosts an early advantage. However, their lead was short lived as Shabana responded almost immediately.
In the 24th minute, a defensive mix-up between Bryton Onyona and goalkeeper Gad Mathews proved costly. Onyona’s misjudged header fell kindly to Wycliffe Omondi, who made no mistake in nodding home the equalizer for Shabana.
With the game finely balanced at 1-1, both sides pushed for a winner, but it was Gor Mahia captain Alpha Onyango who rose to the occasion late in the match.
In the 80th minute, Onyango powered in a header from a Dwang’ corner, sending the Nyayo crowd into wild celebrations as the goal ultimately secured all three points for K’Ogalo.
The victory sees Gor Mahia move to 56 points, re-establishing a 10-point gap over arch rivals AFC Leopards in the title race.
Elsewhere, Kenya Police FC registered a 2-1 win over KCB FC, while Mara Sugar FC played out a goalless draw against APS Bomet FC.
In another fixture, Bidco United FC and Sofapaka FC settled for a 0-0 draw.
At the bottom of the table, Sofapaka remain rooted with 15 points, while Bidco United sit 15th with 22 points, just above APS Bomet who are 16th with 21 points.
Gor Mahia’s latest victory further strengthens their title charge, while Shabana will be left to rue missed opportunities in an otherwise spirited performance.
