Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has defended the party’s decision to front former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, dismissing mounting political pressure and alleged attempts to derail the former minister’s ambitions.
Speaking amid growing debate over Matiang’i’s candidature, Kioni insisted that the party would stand firmly behind its preferred flag bearer and would not succumb to intimidation or external influence.
He maintained that Jubilee’s endorsement of Matiang’i was based on his record in public service, particularly his role in implementing education reforms and coordinating government operations during the previous administration.
Kioni’s remarks come against the backdrop of reports alleging that state agencies are preparing multiple criminal charges against Matiang’i, including claims of abuse of office and financial misconduct. The allegations have intensified political tensions as opposition leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
The Jubilee secretary general claimed that leaders associated with Matiang’i’s presidential bid are being subjected to political harassment and victimization, describing the actions as attempts to weaken support for the former Interior CS.
“We will not abandon our chosen candidate because of intimidation or boardroom deals. The party settled on Dr. Matiang’i after careful consideration, and we remain committed to that decision,” Kioni said.
He also criticized what he termed increasing efforts to suppress dissenting voices and warned against the use of state institutions to settle political scores.
Kioni’s defense comes amid ongoing leadership wrangles within Jubilee Party, which has experienced internal divisions over its direction and alliances ahead of the next General Election.
Despite the internal disputes, the secretary general insisted that his responsibility is to safeguard the party’s ideals and ensure members remain united behind their 2027 strategy.
Matiang’i, who has emerged as one of the leading opposition figures, has stepped up criticism of President William Ruto’s administration in recent months while consolidating support across various regions.
His growing profile has also sparked speculation about possible legal and political battles as the race toward the 2027 General Election gathers momentum.
