Kenya has officially dispatched its first batch of goods to China under a newly established zero-tariff trade arrangement, marking a significant milestone in the country’s export and economic growth strategy.

The consignment was flagged off at the Nairobi Railway Station by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki alongside Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. The cargo, transported via the Madaraka Express Freight Service, included avocado oil, frozen avocado, coffee, and pet pellets.

This shipment represents the first under a framework that allows Kenyan products to enter the Chinese market without import duties—an initiative expected to significantly boost trade and earnings for local producers.

Speaking during the event, Kindiki emphasized the importance of the agreement in strengthening Kenya’s economic prospects through trade. “The true and enduring friendship between Kenya and China has resulted in China granting exports of Kenya access to the Chinese market duty free,” he said.

He added that key exports such as coffee, tea, avocados, nuts, flowers, and minerals will now enjoy zero tariffs, a move expected to benefit millions of farmers, traders, and export businesses. “The gap between us and first world economies is wealth, and the surest way of creating wealth is through trade,” Kindiki noted, expressing confidence in Kenya’s path toward achieving first-world economic status.

The event was attended by several senior government officials, including Davis Chirchir and Lee Kinyanjui, as well as key principal secretaries and transport sector leaders.

The zero-tariff agreement is expected to enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in international markets while opening up new opportunities for exporters, reinforcing the country’s position in global trade.
