KeNHA Announces 24-Hour Closure of Mombasa Road Section for Footbridge Installation

Motorists using Mombasa Road will face major traffic disruptions this weekend after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a temporary 24-hour closure of key sections between Airtel Complex and General Motors (GM) to facilitate the installation of a new pedestrian footbridge.

In a traffic advisory, KeNHA said the closure will begin at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, and remain in effect until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.

The shutdown will affect the Mombasa-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8) as well as both carriageways of the Nairobi Expressway within the affected stretch.

According to the authority, the temporary closure is necessary to allow engineers to safely install fabricated steel beams for the Airtel Footbridge, which will span across the Nairobi Expressway and enhance pedestrian safety along the busy corridor.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution, cooperate with traffic police and follow the proposed traffic management plan during the period of the closure,” KeNHA said.

To minimize disruptions, vehicles approaching the affected section will be diverted through the Airtel interchange loops and adjoining service roads before rejoining Mombasa Road beyond the General Motors area.

Traffic marshals and police officers will be stationed along the diversion routes to direct motorists and maintain traffic flow throughout the operation.

The authority urged road users, particularly those traveling to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Syokimau SGR Terminus and other destinations along the Mombasa-bound corridor, to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time due to expected congestion.

The installation of the Airtel Footbridge forms part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian infrastructure and enhance safety along one of the country’s busiest highways.

KeNHA apologized for any inconvenience caused and appealed for patience and cooperation from motorists as the project is undertaken.
