The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has secured temporary relief from the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) after the High Court of Kenya issued orders suspending the enforcement of the tribunal’s earlier ruling regarding the abandoned match between Gor Mahia FC and Nairobi United FC.
According to court documents issued at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, the High Court granted FKF leave to challenge the SDT decision that had quashed the federation’s ruling to award both clubs one point each following the abandoned fixture.
In the earlier tribunal verdict, the SDT not only overturned the match ruling but also declared the FKF Disciplinary Committee illegal. However, the High Court has now issued stay orders halting the implementation of that decision until the main case is heard and determined.
The orders, issued by Justice R.E. Aburili on March 10, 2026, also granted FKF permission to seek a prohibition order to stop the tribunal from hearing and determining disputes involving football clubs and parties who have not exhausted the internal mechanisms established under the FKF Constitution.
Additionally, the court directed that the main motion in the case be filed and served within 21 days. In the meantime, enforcement of the SDT ruling delivered on March 6, 2026, remains suspended.
The matter is scheduled to be mentioned again on April 20, 2026, for further directions.
The case has sparked fresh debate within Kenyan football circles, especially regarding governance structures within FKF and the authority of sports dispute mechanisms in resolving football related conflicts.
For now, the High Court’s intervention means the earlier tribunal decision will not take effect until the court fully determines the matter.
