NAIROBI, KENYA — Harambee Starlets delivered a composed and clinical performance to defeat India 2-0 at Nyayo National Stadium, securing a place in the final of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Series 2026.
Coached by Beldine Odemba, the Starlets overcame a significant gap in global rankings to outplay the “Blue Tigresses,” combining early attacking intent with disciplined defending to seal a historic result on home soil.
Kenya made a dream start, taking the lead just two minutes into the match when Martha Amunyolete capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire past the Indian goalkeeper, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Tereza Engesha extended the advantage in the 58th minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the box to double the lead and effectively put the match beyond reach.
The result drew praise from William Ruto, who commended the team’s performance and resilience.
“I congratulate the Harambee Starlets on their historic victory, securing a spot in the final of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Series. The team’s determination and performance have brought immense pride to the nation,” the President said in a statement.
The victory sets up a high-profile final against Australia, one of the tournament favorites and ranked among the top teams globally. The Matildas booked their place in the final with a dominant 5-0 win over Malawi.
Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed described the achievement as a significant milestone for women’s football in the country.
“This is a historic moment for our women’s game. To beat a team like India and set up a date with a world-class side like Australia shows the progress we are making,” he said.
The final is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, at Nyayo National Stadium, with kick-off set for 6:00 PM EAT.
Kenya will, however, be monitoring the fitness of defender Ruth Ingosi, who was forced off in the first half due to injury.
With momentum building and strong home support expected, the Starlets will be aiming to cap their impressive run with a landmark victory in the final.
