Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale today led a consultative meeting with officials from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to review the progress of implementing the Mwalimu Comprehensive Medical Cover under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The TSC delegation was headed by Eveleene Mitei, with discussions focusing on improving service delivery and addressing operational challenges within the programme.
Currently, the medical cover provides services to approximately 413,577 teachers and 807,426 of their dependents, marking significant progress in expanding healthcare access for teachers and their families across the country.
Since the transition to the new healthcare system on December 1, 2025, more than 227,000 teachers have already accessed medical services through the programme, indicating active utilization of the new health cover.
During the meeting, stakeholders also addressed operational and data management challenges affecting the programme. They agreed to strengthen internal processes within TSC, establish a joint technical team involving SHA and the Digital Health Agency (DHA), and enhance awareness to help teachers effectively use their patient portals.
Officials also noted that teachers can now access healthcare services in more than 9,000 health facilities across the country.
Those present at the meeting included Mercy Mwangangi, Anthony Lenayara, and Abdi Mohamed, alongside other senior officials from the Ministry of Health.
The discussions reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare for teachers, in line with Kenya’s push toward Universal Health Coverage.
