Nicholas Musonye has been retained as Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), in a major restructuring aimed at accelerating Kenya’s preparations to co-host the continental showpiece.
In the changes confirmed exclusively, Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed has been appointed as the Vice Chairman, reinforcing the federation’s role in the planning and execution of the tournament.
The overhaul also sees businessman Myke Rabar removed from his position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), with Anthony Inzahuli Lung’aho taking over as Head of Secretariat and CEO. Additionally, all FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) members have now been incorporated into the LOC.
The restructuring follows the government’s recent directive to reconstitute the committee, with Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya previously indicating the need for a few changes to ensure the country delivers a successful AFCON in 2027. He emphasized the importance of a team driven by national interest amid the increased responsibility of co-hosting alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Musonye, a former CECAFA Secretary General, brings vast experience in regional football administration. He previously led the LOC during the successful hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), earning praise for the smooth organization of the tournament.
His retention signals continuity at the top, even as the government moves to address operational gaps identified in the previous structure.
Hussein Mohammed, who was part of the outgoing leadership, now formally steps into the deputy role. Elected FKF President in December 2024, he is expected to strengthen coordination between the federation and the LOC.
The most notable change comes at the secretariat level, where Myke Rabar CEO of Homeboyz Entertainment and a key figure during CHAN 2024—has been relieved of his duties. His replacement, Anthony Inzahuli Lung’aho, is described as a technically oriented administrator with a background in parastatal management and project coordination.
His appointment is widely seen as part of the government’s push to inject efficiency and fresh expertise into the LOC ahead of the high stakes tournament.
The inclusion of the entire FKF NEC into the LOC is expected to enhance alignment and streamline decision-making on key areas such as stadium upgrades, logistics, ticketing, and legacy planning.
However, Kenya faces mounting pressure to fast-track its preparations. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently raised concerns over the state of proposed venues across the three host nations, warning that none currently meet the required standards.
With less than 18 months to kick off, the reconstituted LOC will be under immediate scrutiny to deliver on infrastructure, funding, and overall readiness.
The shake-up underscores the government’s determination to leave no stone unturned in hosting a successful AFCON 2027.
