Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Ruiru have launched investigations into the theft of KSh 1.2 million from a Toyota Mark X parked in the basement of an apartment building in Kihunguro area, Kiambu County.
According to preliminary reports, the incident was reported on Saturday evening by a manager of a local microfinance institution. The victim had withdrawn the cash earlier in the day at around 12:45 PM from a bank branch along the Eastern Bypass in Kamakis before placing the money in an envelope and storing it in the vehicle’s boot.
Investigators say the suspect or suspects struck while the car was parked unattended in the basement parking area. The vehicle was reportedly tampered with, allowing access to the boot where the cash had been concealed.
DCI officers who examined the scene confirmed visible signs of forced entry on the vehicle’s locking system, raising suspicions that the theft may have involved prior knowledge of the cash movement.
Attention has now turned to possible internal involvement, with detectives noting that the precision of the theft suggests an inside job cannot be ruled out.
In a setback to the investigation, authorities were initially unable to access CCTV footage from the apartment complex due to the absence of the security officer responsible for the surveillance system. Police have since moved to locate the officer in order to retrieve and analyze the recordings.
The DCI says the footage will be critical in identifying the suspects and establishing how they knew the money was being transported and stored in the vehicle.
