Coast General CEO Suspended as Mombasa County Orders Leadership Audit

By Martha Okoth | February 23, 2026

MOMBASA — The Mombasa County Government has moved to suspend the Chief Executive Officer of Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, paving the way for an in-depth leadership audit following growing public concern over alleged management shortcomings at the facility.

In an official statement, the county government said the hospital’s board agreed to recommend the suspension to allow for an independent review aimed at strengthening governance and restoring public confidence in the region’s largest referral hospital.

“To ensure continuity of services, Dr. Sood Mohamed has been appointed Acting Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect,” the statement read.

County officials assured residents that all medical services, including emergency care and ongoing hospital programmes, will continue uninterrupted during the audit period.

The decision follows sustained pressure from sections of the public who have raised concerns about leadership and service delivery at the hospital. The matter gained political momentum after Mohamed Machele, the Mvita Member of Parliament, publicly called on the county to take swift action.

Speaking earlier, Machele said residents should not suffer due to administrative challenges in a critical public health institution, urging authorities to act decisively.

The county administration, under Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, reiterated its commitment to accountability, sound leadership, and improved service delivery across all county health facilities. Officials noted that further communication will be issued once the leadership audit is concluded.

Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital remains a key referral centre along the Coast region, serving thousands of patients annually from Mombasa and neighbouring counties. The findings of the audit are expected to shape the hospital’s leadership direction and operational reforms in the coming months.
