Nominated Member of Parliament Irene Nyakerario Mayaka has announced progress in efforts to curb match fixing and manipulation in sports competitions across Kenya.
Mayaka revealed that the Sports (Amendment) Bill, National Assembly Bill No. 5 of 2026, which she sponsors, has officially been read for the first time in the National Assembly of Kenya.
The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Sports Act (Kenya) with the main objective of prohibiting and criminalising the manipulation of sports competitions, including match fixing.
According to Mayaka, the bill is aimed at protecting the integrity of sports in Kenya and ensuring fair competition across all sporting disciplines.
The next stage of the legislative process will involve public participation, where stakeholders and members of the public will be invited to submit their views and feedback to Parliament.
The submissions will then be reviewed by the Departmental Committee on Sports before the bill proceeds to the Second Reading in Parliament.
Mayaka expressed optimism about the progress of the bill, saying it represents an important step toward strengthening governance and accountability in Kenya’s sports sector.
She also encouraged members of the public to visit the Parliamentary website to access more details about the proposed legislation and contribute their views during the public participation phase.
