Premier League giants Liverpool FC have officially parted ways with head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect, bringing an end to the Dutch manager’s two-year spell at Anfield. The club confirmed that the decision was made following an end-of-season review and that the search for a successor is already underway.
Slot departs after a dramatic contrast between his two seasons in charge. After succeeding Jürgen Klopp in 2024, he guided Liverpool to their 20th English league title in his debut campaign, earning widespread praise for maintaining the club’s winning culture during a period of transition.
However, the 2025-26 season proved far more difficult. Liverpool struggled to defend their Premier League crown, finishing fifth in the table and falling short in domestic cup competitions. Although the Reds secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, club owners concluded that a change in leadership was necessary to keep the team moving forward.
In a statement, Liverpool praised Slot’s professionalism, leadership, and commitment throughout his tenure, describing his contribution to the club as “significant” and acknowledging the challenges he faced during an emotionally demanding period for the club. The statement emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly and expressed gratitude for the success he brought to Anfield.
Contrary to some reports circulating online, Liverpool’s official announcement indicates that Slot’s departure is effective immediately and that the club is actively seeking a permanent replacement. Media reports have linked former Andoni Iraola with the vacancy following his impressive work at AFC Bournemouth, although no appointment has yet been confirmed.
The departure marks the end of a memorable but turbulent chapter for Liverpool. While Slot will be remembered for delivering the club’s historic 20th league title, the disappointing campaign that followed ultimately led the club’s hierarchy to pursue a new direction ahead of the 2026-27 season.
