Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway and Mombasa Road have been advised to prepare for major traffic disruptions after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and Moja Expressway Company announced a 24-hour closure of key sections beginning tonight.
The closure will take effect at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, and remain in force until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, to allow the installation of fabricated beams for the new Airtel Footbridge, a project aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety along the busy transport corridor.
According to the notice, both carriageways of the Nairobi Expressway between the Airtel Complex and General Motors (GM) will be inaccessible during the operation. The Mombasa-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road (A8) within the same section will also be closed to ground traffic.
Motorists travelling from Mlolongo towards the Central Business District via the expressway have been advised to exit at Eastern Bypass Exit A and rejoin the highway through Southern Bypass Entrance A. Those heading towards Mlolongo from the CBD should exit at Southern Bypass Exit B and reconnect through Eastern Bypass Entrance B.
For motorists using the ground-level Mombasa Road from the CBD, traffic will be diverted near the Shell station onto Likoni Road before joining Enterprise Road and reconnecting with the A8 Highway at General Motors towards Cabanas.
Local traffic will also be able to use the Airtel Complex interchange and the connecting loop roads to bypass the affected section.
KeNHA and Moja Expressway said traffic marshals and police officers will be deployed throughout the closure period to assist motorists and ensure smooth movement along the diversion routes.
Road users have been urged to plan their journeys in advance and expect delays as the installation works proceed. The Airtel Footbridge project forms part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety and reduce accidents along one of Nairobi’s busiest highways.
