Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner has taken his first steps with Wrexham AFC, featuring as a late substitute in a thrilling 5–3 EFL Championship victory over Ipswich Town. The Kenyan international entered the match in the 85th minute, sealing his debut in front of an energized home crowd.
Born Zachary George Onyego Vyner on May 14, 1997, in Peckham, London, to a Kenyan mother and English father, the defender qualifies to represent Kenya and has since become a key figure for the Harambee Stars.
Vyner’s football journey began in Bath following his family’s relocation, where he initially played as a winger before converting to a centre-back. He joined Bristol City’s academy at the age of eight in 2006, progressing through the ranks to make his professional debut in February 2016 during a 2–0 win over MK Dons.
Across nearly a decade, Vyner amassed more than 200 appearances for Bristol City and gained further experience through loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Rotherham United, Aberdeen, and Plymouth Argyle.
His move to Wrexham was completed on February 1, 2026, with reports indicating a £1.5 million transfer fee (approximately KSh 266 million). Vyner signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with an option to extend, bringing an end to a 20-year association with Bristol City.
The debut outing at the STōK Cae Ras lived up to expectations, as Wrexham rallied from a 3–2 deficit to clinch a memorable win. Goals from Ollie Rathbone and a brace by Kieffer Moore powered the comeback, while Vyner’s late introduction helped steady the backline as the hosts surged into the playoff places.
At international level, Vyner continues to add Championship pedigree to Kenya’s defence, playing a vital role in qualifiers and tournament campaigns. His milestone appearance for Wrexham underscores the growing footprint of Kenyan footballers in England and offers inspiration to aspiring talents aiming for the global stage.
