WAJIR STADIUM FACELIFT NEARS COMPLETION AHEAD OF MADARAKA DAY

The government has announced that preparations for the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir are 84 per cent complete, with officials expressing confidence that all projects will be finalized ahead of the June 1 national event.

Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed the progress after leading a multi-agency inspection tour of major installations and infrastructure projects across the county.

According to the government, most construction and renovation works are expected to be completed between May 20 and May 25, allowing sufficient time for security inspections, technical testing and full event simulations before the national celebrations.

The main venue, formerly known as Baraza Park, is undergoing a major transformation into a modern 10,000-seater stadium complete with a football pitch, running tracks, VIP lounges and designated presidential hosting areas.

The preparations also include improvements to Wajir International Airport, expansion of road networks, strengthening of regional security infrastructure and upgrading of presidential accommodation facilities.

As part of the build-up activities, the government will host a week-long thematic exhibition at Wagberi Primary School from May 25 to May 31 under the theme “Education, Skills, and the Future.”

Officials further announced special adjustments to the event programme in consideration of the cultural and religious practices of the region.

All guests and members of the public attending the celebrations will be required to be seated by 8:00 a.m. to allow the programme to conclude early enough for midday prayers.

Accompanied by Ahmed Abdullahi and Ummi Bashir, Omollo said hosting Madaraka Day in Wajir reflects the government’s commitment to rotating national celebrations across different regions to promote inclusivity and national unity.

He added that the initiative is also intended to accelerate infrastructure development and economic growth in historically marginalized counties within the North Eastern region.
