The United States Embassy in Nairobi on Friday, June 26, hosted a farewell luncheon in honour of retiring General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni, celebrating his distinguished career spanning more than four decades while reaffirming the strong security partnership between Kenya and the United States.
The luncheon, held at the Chief of Mission’s Residence in Muthaiga, brought together senior officials from both the US diplomatic mission and the General Service Unit to recognize Lolmodooni’s contribution to Kenya’s security sector and oversee the transition of leadership within one of the country’s most elite law enforcement formations.
The event also served to officially welcome Johana Kiplagat Tonui as the new GSU Commandant, signaling continuity in the long-standing cooperation between the two countries on matters of security and law enforcement.
Leading the US delegation was Regional Security Officer Corryn Stratton, accompanied by Deputy Regional Security Officer Justin Geinert, Assistant Regional Security Officer Jonathan Welch and SPEAR Mentor Tarrol Peterson. They hosted the luncheon in appreciation of Lolmodooni’s years of dedicated service and his role in strengthening collaboration between the GSU and the US Embassy.
The Kenyan delegation was led by the outgoing Commandant, accompanied by his successor Johana Tonui, GSU Recce Tactical Sub-unit Deputy Commanding Officer Jeremy Ndegwa and VIP Protection Officer Commanding Siyad Abdi.
During the meeting, both sides reiterated their commitment to sustaining and deepening bilateral cooperation in several key areas of mutual interest. These include internal security, counterterrorism operations, VIP protection, specialised tactical training, institutional capacity building and professional development of security personnel.
The discussions underscored the importance of continued collaboration in addressing emerging security threats, strengthening operational readiness and enhancing the professionalism of Kenya’s specialised security units through joint engagements and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
The General Service Unit remains one of Kenya’s premier paramilitary formations under the National Police Service, tasked with responding to high-risk security operations, combating terrorism, protecting critical national infrastructure and providing security for strategic government installations.
The unit also plays a vital role in safeguarding foreign diplomatic missions in Kenya, including the United States Embassy in Nairobi, making the partnership between the two institutions strategically significant.
For decades, the United States has worked closely with Kenyan security agencies by supporting specialised training programmes, tactical capacity enhancement and professional exchanges aimed at improving operational effectiveness while promoting international security cooperation.
The farewell luncheon not only celebrated Lolmodooni’s legacy after more than 40 years of public service but also reflected the enduring institutional relationship between the United States and Kenya, with both parties expressing confidence that the partnership will continue to grow under the leadership of the incoming GSU Commandant, Johana Kiplagat Tonui.
The event highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to maintaining regional stability, strengthening counterterrorism efforts and enhancing the capabilities of security agencies in responding to evolving security challenges.
