Sanctioned Ukrainian businessman Vadym Yermolaiev and his wife are fighting for their lives after a suspected parcel bomb exploded at the entrance of their residential building in Monaco on Monday night, in what authorities have described as a deliberate and unprecedented attack in the principality.
The explosion occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla, a residential street located near Monaco’s border with France. The blast sent shrapnel flying through the entrance lobby of the apartment building, injuring several people and triggering a large-scale emergency response.
According to Monaco authorities, the improvised explosive device had been concealed inside a backpack and was packed with bolts, buckshot and other metal fragments designed to maximize casualties. Investigators believe the explosive was intentionally placed in the building’s entrance before being remotely or manually detonated.
Yermolaiev and his wife sustained critical, life-threatening injuries in the explosion. Emergency medical teams stabilized the couple at the scene before they were airlifted to a specialized hospital in Nice, France, where they remain under intensive care.
The couple’s 13-year-old child also suffered injuries during the blast and was admitted to hospital. Authorities said the child’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. Four other people who were near the entrance at the time of the explosion were treated for shock, minor cuts and injuries caused by shattered glass before being discharged.
Minister of State Christophe Mirmand condemned the attack, describing it as one of the most serious acts of violence ever recorded in Monaco. He said preliminary investigations indicate the explosion was a targeted attack rather than a random act of terrorism, adding that security agencies are working to establish the motive and identify everyone involved.
Yermolaiev is one of Ukraine’s wealthiest businessmen, with investments spanning construction, agribusiness, real estate and industrial manufacturing. He has remained a controversial figure since December 2023, when the Ukrainian government imposed sanctions against him over allegations linked to continued commercial activities in Russian-occupied Crimea. The sanctions included restrictions on his business operations and financial assets.
Security officials have launched a cross-border manhunt after surveillance cameras reportedly captured a man wearing a dark hat entering the building shortly before the explosion. Investigators believe the suspect left a backpack inside the entrance lobby before calmly walking away moments before the device detonated.
Police say the suspect fled on foot toward Beausoleil, a French town that borders Monaco, prompting a joint operation involving Monégasque and French law enforcement agencies.
More than 100 emergency personnel, including bomb disposal experts, forensic investigators, police officers and firefighters, were deployed to secure the scene, assist victims and search for evidence. Helicopters and specialized police units were also mobilized to assist in tracking the suspect across the border.
Investigators are examining surveillance footage from surrounding streets, collecting forensic evidence from the blast site and interviewing witnesses as they seek to determine whether the attack was carried out by a lone individual or an organized group.
Authorities in both Monaco and France have not ruled out any motive, including personal, political or business-related factors, although officials continue to stress that the investigation remains at an early stage.
Security has since been heightened across Monaco, with increased police patrols around residential buildings, government institutions and other sensitive locations as investigators continue efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
