Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has launched an extensive homicide investigation after announcing that a woman wanted in connection with the June 29 bombing at a luxury apartment complex in Monaco was found dead near Kyiv, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn international attention.
In an official statement, the SBU said the woman was discovered with gunshot wounds to the head shortly before midnight on Monday, July 6. Her death has prompted a parallel criminal investigation, with authorities confirming the arrest of two suspects believed to have been involved in the killing.
Confirming the arrests, the agency said:
“Both suspects were detained on suspicion of committing murder with premeditation by a group of individuals.”
According to the SBU, investigators moved swiftly after the discovery of the body, leading to the detention of two individuals who are now the focus of the murder inquiry. The agency said the suspects are being questioned as investigators seek to establish the motive behind the killing and reconstruct the events leading to the victim’s death.
The security agency stated that evidence collected during the investigation, including materials recovered during searches and financial records, forms part of the ongoing inquiry. Investigators are also examining whether the homicide is linked to the broader international investigation into the Monaco bombing.
Authorities further disclosed that searches conducted during the operation uncovered additional evidence that has been incorporated into the case file. However, the SBU has not released detailed findings, noting that investigations remain active and that evidence will be subjected to judicial scrutiny.
The developments come less than two weeks after an explosion at the entrance of the Sun Palace luxury apartments on the Monaco–France border. The blast injured several people, including a Ukrainian businessman and members of his family, prompting investigations by authorities in Monaco with support from international law enforcement agencies.
The bombing has remained under investigation as authorities work to establish those responsible for planning and executing the attack. The latest developments in Ukraine have added a new international dimension to the case, with investigators now examining potential links between the Monaco incident and the subsequent homicide near Kyiv.
The SBU said the murder investigation and the Monaco bombing inquiry are continuing simultaneously, with Ukrainian authorities cooperating with international partners where necessary. Officials have not disclosed whether additional arrests are expected or whether further suspects have been identified.
The two individuals arrested in connection with the homicide are expected to face legal proceedings under Ukrainian law.
