Police have arrested two more suspects in connection with a robbery with violence and murder case in Mombasa, recovering suspected stolen Tanzanite gemstones valued at approximately $40,000 (Sh5.1 million) during the operation.
The latest arrests mark a significant breakthrough in ongoing investigations into the violent incident, which left one person dead and prompted an intensive manhunt by detectives.
According to police, the suspects were apprehended following intelligence-led operations carried out in Mombasa. During the raids, officers recovered a quantity of suspected Tanzanite minerals believed to have been stolen during the robbery.
Investigators said the recovered gemstones have an estimated market value of Sh5.1 million and will undergo forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation to establish their ownership and confirm their authenticity.
Police believe the two suspects are linked to a wider criminal network involved in the robbery and are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder and the movement of the stolen minerals after the attack.
The arrests bring the total number of suspects in custody to several individuals as detectives continue pursuing other persons believed to have participated in the crime.
Authorities have also indicated that additional recoveries and arrests are expected as investigations progress, with detectives following fresh leads obtained during the interrogation of the suspects.
The recovered Tanzanite has been secured as an exhibit and will be presented in court alongside other evidence once the suspects are formally charged.
Police have urged members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or through established security reporting channels, assuring that all information received will be treated confidentially.
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations as detectives continue piecing together the circumstances surrounding the robbery with violence, the murder, and the suspected trafficking of the valuable gemstones.
