U.S. President Donald Trump faced loud boos from sections of fans at Madison Square Garden on Monday night after his image appeared on the arena’s giant screens during pre-game ceremonies ahead of Game Three of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.

Trump’s attendance marked a historic milestone, making him the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game while in office.

The president watched the contest from an executive suite alongside New York Knicks owner James Dolan amid unprecedented security arrangements around the arena.

The reaction unfolded during the singing of the U.S. national anthem by singer Avery Wilson. Fans initially broke into chants of “U-S-A,” but the atmosphere shifted when television cameras focused on Trump giving a military salute and his image was projected on the jumbotron. Large sections of the crowd responded with sustained boos that echoed throughout the packed arena.

Similar reactions were reported at an outdoor watch party in Bryant Park, where fans following the game on giant screens also voiced their displeasure after Trump’s presence was shown.

Speaking to reporters later before boarding Air Force One, Trump dismissed suggestions that he had been jeered.

“It was, I think, mostly cheers. It was loud, and it was very enthusiastic,” Trump said.

His visit prompted extensive security measures by the Secret Service, including counter-drone protocols and the establishment of a large restricted zone around Madison Square Garden. The heightened arrangements caused traffic disruptions across parts of Manhattan and forced fans to queue for extended periods before entering the arena.

Several commuters and local leaders criticized the disruptions, arguing that the president’s visit contributed to severe congestion around midtown Manhattan. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was among those who raised concerns over the impact of the security lockdown on residents and basketball fans.

Trump’s appearance came against the backdrop of heightened political tensions and increased security surrounding public events involving the president. His administration has faced growing divisions across the country, and public reactions at sporting events have often reflected broader political sentiments.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs spoiled the evening for home supporters by defeating the New York Knicks 115-111 to end the Knicks’ 13-game playoff winning streak and cut the NBA Finals series deficit to 2-1.

Game Four of the championship series is scheduled for Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, where attention is expected to remain focused both on the action on the court and the atmosphere surrounding one of the most closely watched NBA Finals in recent years.
