Six people were killed and seven others injured in a tragic road accident on Friday night after two public service vehicles collided head-on at Katumani near Konza Technopolis City along the Machakos–Makueni county border.
The crash involved a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) bus travelling from Mombasa towards Nairobi and a matatu shuttle that had departed Nairobi and was heading to the Coast. The collision occurred along the busy single-carriageway section of the highway, an area frequently used by long-distance public transport vehicles.
According to authorities, six people died at the scene as a result of the impact, while seven others sustained injuries of varying severity. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured passengers to nearby health facilities, where they were admitted for treatment.
Security officers and rescue teams worked through the night to clear the wreckage and restore the flow of traffic as investigations into the cause of the accident commenced.
Mukaa Sub-County Deputy Commissioner urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads following the fatal crash.
“My call to the drivers is that they should be careful,” the administrator said.
The accident occurred near the Konza Technopolis area, a section of the Nairobi–Mombasa highway that experiences heavy traffic from passenger vehicles and cargo transport. The route has witnessed several serious road crashes over the years, prompting repeated calls for motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and speed limits.
Authorities have yet to establish the exact cause of the collision. Investigators are expected to examine factors including speed, road conditions, driver conduct and the mechanical condition of the vehicles involved before releasing their findings.
The latest tragedy adds to the growing number of fatal road accidents reported across the country, renewing concerns over road safety, particularly on major highways where head-on collisions continue to claim lives.
Road safety stakeholders have consistently urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking, observe speed limits and remain vigilant, especially when travelling at night, to reduce the risk of fatal crashes.
Police have appealed to all road users to exercise caution and cooperate with traffic regulations as investigations into the Katumani accident continue.
