Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from the Senate Standing Committee on Energy following a leadership reshuffle announced on the floor of the House on Wednesday.
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot informed senators that Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang would replace Sifuna on the influential committee.
The move effectively ends Sifuna’s tenure on the committee chaired by Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, who also serves as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader.
The reshuffle comes against the backdrop of growing tensions within ODM, where Sifuna has repeatedly criticized the broad-based cooperation arrangement between the party leadership and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
His outspoken stance has sparked divisions within the party, with some members accusing him of insubordination and failing to support the party’s official position.
Political observers view his removal from the Energy Committee as part of wider disciplinary efforts targeting the Nairobi senator amid the ongoing internal wrangles.
Reports indicate that Sifuna could face further changes to his positions within the party and the Senate, including attempts to remove him as ODM Secretary-General and Senate Deputy Minority Whip.
However, Sifuna has challenged the disciplinary efforts and maintained that his views reflect the aspirations of party supporters opposed to the broad-based arrangement.
A ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal concerning his status within the party is expected to play a key role in determining the next phase of the dispute.
The latest developments underscore the intensifying internal contest within ODM as the party navigates differences over its relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration and preparations for the 2027 General Election.
