Edwin Sifuna has criticised the government’s focus on high-profile infrastructure projects, warning that “glittering projects” risk masking pressing issues affecting Kenyans.
The senator singled out the proposed railway project to Kisumu, supported by President William Ruto, saying that while such developments are significant, they should not overshadow urgent national concerns.
“Don’t be deceived by those shiny things like railways and stadiums,” Sifuna said.
Speaking in Nairobi, he raised alarm over rising insecurity in parts of the country, citing recent incidents in Marsabit County and Vihiga County, and questioned whether sufficient attention is being given to protecting citizens.
He also highlighted challenges in public healthcare, particularly at Kenyatta National Hospital, pointing to shortages of essential medical supplies, overstretched facilities, and malfunctioning equipment.
Sifuna’s remarks come amid a national debate on government priorities, especially the balance between large-scale infrastructure projects and the delivery of essential public services.
While acknowledging the importance of infrastructure for economic growth, he stressed that true development should be measured by improvements in citizens’ everyday lives, urging the government to focus on enhancing security, strengthening healthcare systems, and addressing immediate public needs.
