SENATOR WAKOLI RAISES CONCERNS OVER PENDING BILLS IN BUNGOMA COUNTY

By Joshua Otieno | March 12, 2026

David Wakoli, the Senator for Bungoma County, has raised concerns in the Senate over the growing amount of unpaid bills owed by the county government to contractors and service providers.

While speaking at Parliament Buildings on Thursday, the lawmaker requested a formal statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Budget regarding the status of the county’s pending bills.

Senator Wakoli said the continued delay in settling payments has negatively affected contractors, suppliers and businesses that have already delivered goods or completed projects for the county government.

In his request, the senator asked the committee to disclose the total amount of pending bills owed by the Bungoma County Government as of June 30, 2025, including a detailed breakdown of how much is owed to each contractor or service provider.

He also asked the committee to indicate the financial years when the payments became due, as well as the specific projects, goods or services that led to the outstanding debts.

Additionally, Wakoli sought clarification on whether the county government has conducted any verification or audit of the pending bills, and if such an exercise has been done, the committee should present its findings.

The senator further asked the committee to explain the strategy and timelines the county government has put in place to clear the outstanding bills.

He also requested an explanation on how the bills accumulated, including whether investigations have been carried out to determine if any county officials were responsible and what action has been taken against those found culpable.

Finally, Senator Wakoli urged the committee to outline measures being introduced to prevent the buildup of future pending bills, including improvements in procurement planning and stronger financial management systems within the county government.
