Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has urged authorities to balance strict legal enforcement with humanitarian considerations in the treatment of Rohingya refugees, in line with Malaysia’s federal policy framework.
Speaking after a public meet-the-people session, Saarani said the state recognizes the humanitarian protections afforded to refugees holding valid United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards, stressing that Malaysia must continue to observe international norms while maintaining public order.
However, he drew a firm line on illegal economic activity, warning that refugees are not permitted to operate businesses or engage in trade within the state. He noted growing complaints regarding Rohingya individuals running commercial enterprises, saying such activities violate domestic regulations.
The Menteri Besar also criticized instances where local property owners allegedly lease commercial premises to refugees rather than using them for legitimate business operations, describing the practice as a loophole that undermines enforcement efforts.
Saarani further cautioned the Rohingya community against actions that could heighten tensions in high-density areas such as Manjung, urging respect for local laws and social expectations. He warned that any form of unlawful activity or behavior that threatens public order would prompt firm action from police and immigration authorities.
