President William Ruto has unveiled a multi-billion shilling development package for Marsabit County following a meeting with a county delegation led by Governor Mohamud Mohamed, with the projects aimed at transforming the region into a key infrastructure, trade and economic hub.

Under the plan, the national government will channel more than KSh18.41 billion into roads, energy, housing, healthcare and water projects across the expansive northern county.

A major portion of the funding will go towards road infrastructure, with KSh1.4 billion allocated for the Marsabit-Segel road and KSh1.8 billion set aside for the Segel-Maikona road. An additional KSh100 million will fund strategic security roads, while KSh2 billion has been earmarked for the Loglogo-Korr-Kargi, North Horr-Dukana and Sololo-Anona-Golole-Uran road corridors to improve connectivity and facilitate trade.

The government also announced plans to partner with the Marsabit County Government in establishing a dry port in Moyale, which is expected to enhance customs and logistics operations and strengthen cross-border trade between Kenya and Ethiopia.

In the energy sector, KSh2.81 billion has been allocated for last-mile electricity connectivity and the installation of mini-grids to supply power to remote centres and stimulate economic activity.

Urban development projects will receive KSh7 billion for the construction of affordable housing units, modern markets and student hostels with a combined capacity of 1,500 learners.

The healthcare sector is set for a major boost with plans to establish a Level 6 referral hospital at a cost of KSh1.3 billion, a move expected to reduce the need for residents to seek specialized treatment outside the county.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment to completing the Badasa Dam project to address persistent water shortages. Additional water supply projects are planned for Kalacha, Hurri Hills, Sololo, Korr and Loglogo as part of efforts to support agriculture and livestock production.

President Ruto said the investments are intended to unlock Marsabit’s economic potential, improve access to essential services and enhance regional integration with neighbouring Ethiopia.
