President William Ruto has officially commissioned the Ksh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road flyover at the Junction Mall intersection in Nairobi, describing the project as a major investment aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting economic productivity in the capital.

Speaking during the launch on Monday, June 29, the President said the overpass would eliminate one of Nairobi’s most congested traffic bottlenecks, significantly reducing travel time for thousands of motorists who use the corridor daily.

Ruto noted that traffic congestion has for years imposed heavy economic costs on businesses and commuters through fuel wastage, delayed deliveries and lost working hours, saying the new infrastructure is expected to reverse those losses.

“Every hour spent in traffic translates into lost income, reduced productivity and missed opportunities. Our investment in modern road infrastructure is intended to restore that valuable time to Kenyans and improve the efficiency of doing business,” the President said.

Constructed by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), the project features a 255-metre, four-lane flyover designed to ease the movement of traffic between Ngong Road and Naivasha Road at one of Nairobi’s busiest intersections.

The new design replaces the previous congestion-prone traffic arrangement by introducing dedicated loop ramps that separate traffic flows, allowing motorists travelling between the two roads to move without lengthy delays.

The project also incorporates non-motorised transport facilities, including pedestrian walkways and dedicated cycling lanes, alongside improved drainage infrastructure intended to protect the road from flooding during heavy rains.

According to the government, the flyover forms part of a broader strategy to improve road safety by reducing conflict points between motorists, pedestrians and cyclists while enhancing mobility across the city.

The President said the improved traffic flow is expected to lower transport costs for businesses by reducing fuel consumption, vehicle maintenance expenses and travel time for commercial transport operators.

He added that the project would also improve the quality of life for Nairobi residents by enabling workers to spend less time on the road and more time with their families.

The Junction Mall overpass is one of several infrastructure projects being undertaken to decongest Nairobi and support the city’s growing population and expanding economy.

Ruto announced that preparations have been completed for the construction of the planned high-capacity Thika Expressway, which will run from Museum Hill to Thika Town. Construction is expected to begin in September 2026.

He said the expressway will complement existing road infrastructure by increasing capacity along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors and reducing travel times for motorists commuting between Nairobi and the surrounding counties.

The President also highlighted ongoing road improvement works by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), including the construction of additional service lanes and modern pedestrian footbridges along Waiyaki Way to improve safety and reduce traffic conflicts in the Westlands area.

In addition, he cited the government’s Kenya Urban Mobility and Growth Threshold Programme, which seeks to modernise transport planning through integrated land use, improved public transport systems and sustainable urban infrastructure.

Government officials present at the commissioning said the flyover is expected to serve tens of thousands of motorists daily and will play a key role in improving connectivity between western Nairobi, the Central Business District and neighbouring counties.

They expressed confidence that continued investment in strategic transport infrastructure will strengthen Nairobi’s position as a regional commercial hub while supporting economic growth through improved efficiency, lower logistics costs and enhanced mobility.
