President William Samoei Ruto has officially begun his four-day development tour of the Nyanza region, with visits planned to Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay and Siaya counties to launch and inspect various development projects.
President Ruto began Monday’s activities, September 14, 2026, in Kisumu County, where he arrived in Kisumu Central to launch the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project, a major investment aimed at improving access to clean water and expanding sewerage services in the city.
Speaking during the launch, Ruto said the project would address longstanding sewerage challenges in Kisumu, including the expansion of the existing sewer system.
“We are starting a major project and sewer system in Nyamasaria. It will cost Sh8.4 billion to ensure that the issues of sewerage are addressed,” Ruto said.
The President said the project would also increase water coverage across Kisumu, with the programme being implemented in phases.
“Within this programme, we are increasing water coverage. Phase One is what we have launched, Phase Two is going on, and Phase Three we will announce next week to ensure that Kisumu City has water and sewerage,” he said.
Ruto further linked the water and sanitation investment to the government’s affordable housing programme, saying adequate water and sewerage infrastructure would be necessary to support new housing developments.
“In Kisumu here we are constructing affordable housing, and we want enough capacity for sewer and water in Kisumu County,” the President said.
The tour began on Sunday, September 13, in Migori County, where President Ruto launched the Kegonga Cluster Water Project, inspected progress on the Lower Kuja Irrigation Project, and launched the Ngere-Mapera Road.
On the second day of the tour, the President is also expected to inspect road projects along the Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni route, as well as the Kipsitet Road.
Ruto said his administration had allocated Sh20 billion for road projects in Kisumu County, with about 270 kilometres of new roads being constructed within Kisumu City.
