Human rights organizations in Mombasa have issued a strong condemnation of the prolonged delay in completing the Nyali Bridge–Mtwapa Highway project, lunga lunga road and the likoni ferry bridge terming the eight-year stall unacceptable and detrimental to residents and economic activity in the region.
Speaking during a press briefing held at the MUHURI Legal Aid Clinic , representatives from VOCAL Africa, MUHURI, HAKI Africa, SHE Rises, and the Social Justice Centres Working Group jointly criticized the continued delays, citing the negative impact on transport, safety, and local livelihoods.
The groups announced the issuance of a 14-day demand notice to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), calling for immediate action and a clear timeline for the project’s completion. They warned that failure to comply could result in legal action and sustained public pressure.
We cannot continue to watch as critical infrastructure projects stall while wananchi suffer daily said Francis Auma of MUHURI.
“This delay has caused immense inconvenience, economic losses, and increased risks for road users.”said Francis ouma of MUHURI.
Representative of HAKI Africa echoed the concerns, emphasizing accountability and transparency in public infrastructure projects.
“Kenyans deserve answers. Public funds have been allocated, yet the project remains incomplete. We demand urgency and accountability from KeNHA,” he said.
Residents and stakeholders in the Nyali–Mtwapa corridor have long raised concerns over traffic congestion, accidents, and disrupted business operations linked to the incomplete highway. The civil society groups now say they will mobilize communities and explore legal avenues if no progress is made within the stipulated timeframe.
The Nyali Bridge–Mtwapa Highway is a key transport link in Mombasa County, connecting major economic zones and serving thousands of commuters daily. Its delayed completion continues to spark public outcry and renewed calls for government intervention.
