Religious Leaders at the Coast Call for Calm Following Likoni Political Clashes

A coalition of religious leaders from the Pwani Patriotic Religious Leaders (PPRL) has appealed for peace and restraint after recent political violence in Likoni, Mombasa County, warning that rising tensions could undermine national unity and public safety.

Speaking during a press briefing, PPRL Chairperson Sheikh Abuqatada expressed concern over the growing trend of politically motivated confrontations, saying violence has no place in a democratic society. He urged political leaders to embrace dialogue and peaceful engagement instead of actions that divide communities.

The cleric called on security agencies to investigate those responsible for inciting or participating in the unrest and ensure they are held accountable. According to him, repeated incidents of political violence continue to claim the lives of innocent young people who should instead be contributing to the country’s development.

He challenged politicians to promote messages of tolerance and coexistence, stressing that leadership should unite citizens rather than deepen political and social divisions.

PPRL Youth Leader Zuber Abeid Salim also cautioned leaders against making inflammatory public statements, saying reckless political rhetoric can easily trigger conflict and threaten the country’s peace.

He appealed to all political players to conduct their campaigns and public engagements responsibly by rejecting intimidation, violence, and any form of hate speech that could fuel tensions among supporters.

Another member of the organization, Abu Mukhsin, emphasized that politics should be driven by respect, issue-based debate, and national interests instead of hostility. He noted that incitement and indiscipline often leave communities suffering the consequences of unnecessary conflict.

The religious leaders concluded by urging Kenyans to remain peaceful and refuse to be manipulated into violent activities. They maintained that preserving unity and stability is essential for the country’s progress and for ensuring future elections are conducted in a peaceful, free, and credible environment.
