Gor Mahia’s return to the continental stage ended in disappointment on Sunday after Egyptian giants Pyramids FC dismantled K’Ogalo 5-1 at the Air Defence Stadium in Cairo to complete a commanding 7-1 aggregate victory in the CAF Champions League first qualifying round.
The Kenyan champions had already suffered a 2-0 defeat in the first leg at Nyayo National Stadium, leaving them with a mountain to climb in Cairo. Their hopes of a comeback quickly disappeared as Pyramids took control and exposed Gor Mahia’s defensive weaknesses.
Walid El-Karti opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Nasser Maher doubled Pyramids’ advantage ten minutes later. Youssef Ibrahim added a third just before half-time, leaving Gor Mahia facing an almost impossible task after the break.
David Okoth gave K’Ogalo a brief lifeline when he pulled one back in the third minute of first-half stoppage time, but the response was never enough to change the outcome of the tie.
Pyramids continued to dominate after the restart before Ziko added a fourth in the 90th minute. Mahmoud Abdel-Hafiz then completed the rout two minutes into stoppage time, sealing a 5-1 victory and a 7-1 aggregate triumph for the Egyptian side.
The defeat brings Gor Mahia’s 2026/27 CAF Champions League campaign to an abrupt end and extends a difficult period for the Kenyan champions against Egyptian opposition.
Despite the disappointing exit, Gor Mahia remain one of the most decorated clubs in East African football and have a distinguished history on the continental stage. K’Ogalo became the first Kenyan and East African club to win a major CAF club competition when they lifted the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987.
That historic triumph remains the high point of Gor Mahia’s continental story, while the club has also reached the African Cup Winners’ Cup final on other occasions and enjoyed notable runs in CAF competitions.
In the modern era, however, Gor Mahia have found the challenge increasingly difficult, particularly when facing financially powerful clubs from North Africa. The two matches against Pyramids underlined the gap that still exists between Kenya’s leading clubs and some of the continent’s heavily backed teams.
Pyramids, a club that emerged as a major force in Egyptian and African football in recent years, showed their quality over the two legs, scoring seven goals against Gor Mahia while conceding only once.
For Gor Mahia, attention now turns back to domestic football. K’Ogalo are scheduled to face Kakamega Homeboyz away on September 18 as they begin the process of putting their continental disappointment behind them.
The 7-1 aggregate defeat will undoubtedly leave questions over Gor Mahia’s competitiveness at the highest level of African club football, but the club’s rich continental history remains intact.
For now, though, Pyramids have ended K’Ogalo’s latest continental adventure in emphatic fashion, leaving Gor Mahia to regroup and rebuild ahead of the domestic battles that await.
