President William Ruto on Wednesday hosted Football Kenya Federation Premier League side AFC Leopards at State House, Nairobi, where he pledged financial and infrastructural support aimed at revitalizing one of Kenya’s most decorated football clubs.
The breakfast meeting brought together the club’s leadership, technical bench and players, with discussions focusing on the future of the 13-time league champions and the broader development of football in the country.
Addressing the delegation, President Ruto acknowledged AFC Leopards’ rich history and contribution to Kenyan football, describing the club as a national sporting institution whose success has inspired generations of players and supporters.
“I appreciate the role AFC Leopards has played in shaping football in Kenya. We want to see our clubs become financially stable and competitive both locally and internationally,” the President said.
As part of the government’s commitment, President Ruto announced a financial package to support the club’s operations while also pledging assistance in improving training facilities and youth development programmes.
The President emphasized that sports remain a key pillar in the government’s agenda of creating employment opportunities for young people and promoting national unity.
He said the government would continue partnering with football clubs and other sports organizations to strengthen local talent development and enhance Kenya’s competitiveness on the continental and global stage.
AFC Leopards officials welcomed the support, saying it comes at a critical time as the club works to stabilize its finances and rebuild a team capable of challenging for domestic honours.
Club chairman Dan Shikanda thanked the President for engaging directly with the club, noting that the support would ease financial pressures that have affected player welfare, preparations and administrative operations.
“We appreciate the President for recognizing the importance of football and the role AFC Leopards continues to play in nurturing talent. This support gives us renewed hope as we prepare for the new season,” he said.
The club has in recent years struggled with financial constraints, including delayed player salaries, limited sponsorship and operational challenges that have affected its competitiveness in the FKF Premier League.
Players who attended the meeting also expressed optimism that the government’s intervention would improve their welfare and provide a more stable environment for professional football.
The discussions further explored the need to strengthen youth academies, modernize sports infrastructure and attract private investment into Kenyan football.
Sports stakeholders have repeatedly called for sustainable financing models for local clubs, arguing that stronger institutions are necessary if Kenyan teams are to compete effectively in regional and continental competitions.
President Ruto reiterated that the government is committed to working with football stakeholders to transform the sport into a viable economic sector capable of creating jobs, nurturing talent and boosting the country’s international sporting profile.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both the government and AFC Leopards leadership to work together in restoring the club’s competitive edge while contributing to the growth of football across the country.
