President William Ruto on Monday hosted political and community leaders from Isiolo, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties at State House, Nairobi, for a high-level consultative meeting focused on accelerating development and addressing the unique socio-economic challenges facing Northern Kenya.
The meeting brought together governors, senators, Members of Parliament and other regional leaders to review the progress of ongoing government projects and discuss strategies aimed at unlocking the region’s economic potential through increased investment in infrastructure, security, education, healthcare and water resources.
President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Northern Kenya receives equitable development, saying the government is prioritizing projects that will improve livelihoods, stimulate economic growth and enhance access to essential public services.
The leaders deliberated on ways of fast-tracking key infrastructure projects, including road construction, electricity connectivity, expansion of water supply systems and digital infrastructure to improve communication and access to government services in the region.
Discussions also centered on strengthening security in border counties, promoting peace-building initiatives, supporting livestock production, expanding irrigation schemes and creating more employment opportunities for young people through targeted economic empowerment programmes.
The President noted that Northern Kenya holds enormous potential in livestock, renewable energy, trade and tourism, adding that the government is committed to creating an enabling environment that attracts investment while improving the quality of life for residents.
Leaders from the five counties welcomed the consultative approach and called for stronger collaboration between the national and county governments to ensure timely implementation of development projects. They also emphasized the need for increased budgetary allocations to address persistent challenges such as drought, inadequate infrastructure and limited access to healthcare and education.
The meeting further explored measures to enhance cross-border trade with neighboring countries, improve transport corridors and strengthen regional integration to boost economic activity in the northern frontier.
President Ruto assured the leaders that their concerns would be incorporated into government planning and budgeting, reiterating that his administration remains committed to inclusive development and ensuring that no region is left behind.
The consultative meeting forms part of the government’s ongoing engagements with regional leaders across the country as it seeks to accelerate the implementation of flagship development programmes and foster sustainable economic growth in all parts of Kenya.
