Kenya Police Bullets WFC have booked their place in the semi-finals of the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda, after defeating Burundi’s FC Ujeco 3-1.
The Kenyan champions, who had earlier beaten Tanzania’s Simba Queens 2-1, needed a positive result to secure their progression to the knockout stage.
Martha Amunyoletelo was the star of the show, scoring twice, while Eglay Mukhwana also found the back of the net for Police Bullets. Irene Tuyishemeze scored FC Ujeco’s consolation goal.
The victory sends Police Bullets into the semi-finals, where they will face Yei Joint Stars WFC of South Sudan, who emerged as the surprise package of the tournament.
Coach David Bujego Rangon believes his team has what it takes to finally lift the regional title.
“We have tried and failed to win the trophy before, but this time we are determined and prepared to go all the way and win the title,” Rangon said.
Kawempe Muslim Ladies Hit Eight
Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies also stormed into the semi-finals after demolishing FC Ujeco 8-0.
Latifah Nakasi and Jovia Nakago each scored twice, while Samalie Nakacwa, Agnes Nabukenya and Cecelia Apiding were also on target. An own goal from FC Ujeco defender Hana Yimer completed the rout.
Kawempe Muslim Ladies coach Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi praised his players after recording two wins, scoring nine goals without conceding.
“We go back to the drawing board to prepare for the semi-final stage because we are determined to perform better than our third-place finish in 2024,” Kiyingi said.
The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, the 2024 champions, also progressed as the second-best placed team across the three groups after recording three points and a superior goal difference over Simba Queens.
The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, with Kawempe Muslim Ladies facing Commercial Bank of Ethiopia before Kenya Police Bullets take on Yei Joint Stars WFC.
The third-place playoff and final will be played on August 31.
