Police have launched investigations into a deadly attack by heavily armed gunmen on Gaboy village in Hadado Sub-county, Wajir County, that left one person dead and four others injured.

According to preliminary reports, the attack occurred on Sunday when the assailants stormed the village and opened fire, causing panic among residents. The injured victims were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment, while the body of the deceased was moved to a local mortuary pending further investigations.

Security officials said the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, with detectives working to establish whether the incident was linked to inter-clan tensions, banditry, or cross-border criminal activities. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities and have appealed to residents to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that could assist in identifying those responsible.

The incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in parts of northeastern Kenya, particularly areas bordering Somalia, which have for years experienced sporadic attacks by armed groups, livestock rustlers, and recurrent inter-community conflicts over resources.

Regional security agencies have intensified patrols and launched joint operations in the area as part of efforts to track down the attackers and prevent further violence. Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid taking retaliatory action that could escalate tensions.

Government officials noted that security interventions in the region have been strengthened in recent years through the establishment of new administrative units and the deployment of additional police officers and national government personnel to areas considered vulnerable to insecurity.

Local leaders have also called for enhanced intelligence gathering and closer collaboration between communities and security agencies to address the recurring attacks that continue to threaten peace and disrupt livelihoods.

The latest incident comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to stabilize the Kenya-Somalia border region, which has been grappling with security challenges ranging from cross-border incursions to clan-related disputes.

Investigations are ongoing, with security agencies expressing confidence that those behind the attack will be brought to justice.
