The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued an urgent public warning to motorists over a growing wave of fraudsters exploiting the rollout of the digital eLogbook system to steal personal information and extort money from unsuspecting vehicle owners.
The authority cautioned that cybercriminals are taking advantage of increased public demand for digital government services by creating fake platforms and impersonating NTSA officials to deceive motorists seeking assistance with eLogbook services.
According to the authority, fraudsters have established fake social media pages, websites and messaging platforms where they falsely claim to offer faster processing of eLogbooks, vehicle registration services and other NTSA transactions at a fee.
The scammers reportedly lure motorists by promising to expedite applications, download eLogbooks or resolve technical issues in exchange for payments made through mobile money or bank transfers.
NTSA warned that these individuals are not affiliated with the authority and are operating illegally.
The authority also revealed that cybercriminals are using phishing tactics to obtain sensitive personal information from members of the public.
Victims are being tricked into clicking fake links that closely resemble official government portals before being asked to provide personal details such as National Identity Card numbers, vehicle registration numbers, mobile phone contacts, passwords and one-time passwords (OTPs).
Once the information is obtained, fraudsters may gain unauthorized access to motorists’ accounts or use the details to facilitate identity theft and financial fraud.
In some cases, scammers have reportedly posed as NTSA officers or authorized service providers, contacting vehicle owners through phone calls, text messages and social media while instructing them to follow fraudulent procedures or make payments to personal accounts.
NTSA has stressed that it does not authorize any third-party agents or brokers to process eLogbooks or provide official services on its behalf.
The authority clarified that its officers do not download eLogbooks
