NTSA Launches Instant Fines Management System to Boost Road Safety

By Brian Rajula |March 9, 2026

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially launched a new Instant Fines Traffic Management System, a digital platform designed to automatically detect and penalize traffic violations across the country.

In a public notice issued by the authority in Kenya, NTSA announced that the system is now operational and will automatically issue traffic violation notifications to motorists through SMS once an offence is detected.

According to NTSA, the new system is fully automated and operates without human intervention, a move aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in enforcing traffic laws. The authority stated that once a violation is detected, the motorist will receive a notification indicating the offence and the corresponding fine.

Motorists will be required to settle the fines within seven days through branches of KCB Group across the country. Failure to pay within the stipulated period will result in the fine attracting interest. Additionally, drivers or vehicle owners with pending fines will be restricted from accessing NTSA services until the payments are cleared.

NTSA also released a list of some of the top digital traffic fines that will be automatically enforced by the system.

Speeding Violations

  • Exceeding the speed limit by 6–10 km/h – KSh 500

  • Exceeding the speed limit by 11–15 km/h – KSh 3,000

  • Exceeding the speed limit by 16–20 km/h – KSh 10,000

Traffic Signal and Lane Violations

  • Running a red light – KSh 3,000

  • Ignoring road signs – KSh 3,000

  • Driving in restricted or bus lanes – KSh 3,000

  • PSV picking passengers at unauthorized stops – KSh 3,000

Infrastructure and Road Use Offences

  • Road obstruction – KSh 10,000

  • Improper or missing number plates – KSh 10,000

  • Driving on a pedestrian walkway – KSh 5,000

Driver Behavior and Safety

  • Using a mobile phone while driving – KSh 2,000

  • Not wearing a seatbelt – KSh 500

The automated system uses AI-powered traffic cameras installed at major road junctions and highways to detect violations such as speeding, red-light offences, and failure to wear seatbelts.

NTSA has urged motorists to strictly observe traffic regulations and promptly respond to official notifications issued through the new system.

The authority says the initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety and reduce traffic violations under the national “Usalama Barabarani” (Road Safety) campaign.

Further details about the system will be communicated through official government channels.
