Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has described the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election as a clear indication that the Mt. Kenya region has withdrawn its support for President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
Speaking during an interview on KTN News, Maina said the outcome of the by-election should serve as a wake-up call to the government, arguing that the electorate had used the poll to express growing dissatisfaction with the current administration.
She noted that the overwhelming victory by DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Waweru demonstrated a significant shift in the region’s political landscape, adding that the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) had suffered a heavy defeat after securing only a small share of the vote.
According to Maina, the result reflected the sentiments of many voters in Mt. Kenya, who she claimed no longer have confidence in the government they overwhelmingly supported during the 2022 General Election.
“The people have spoken through the ballot. The Ol Kalou by-election has sent a strong message that the people of Mt. Kenya are demanding a different political direction,” she said.
The Kirinyaga lawmaker also accused the state of allowing acts of intimidation and violence during the campaign period, alleging that some government-aligned politicians were present in areas where attacks against opposition supporters were reported.
She further claimed that East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Kanini Kega was threatened during the campaigns and had to be rescued by residents after being confronted by individuals she described as hired goons.
Maina argued that despite the reported incidents, voters remained determined to exercise their democratic right and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
She said the outcome had inspired ordinary Kenyans by demonstrating that citizens can freely cast their votes, safeguard the results and overcome political pressure through democratic means.
The Ol Kalou by-election has continued to generate political debate across the country, with leaders from both the government and opposition drawing differing conclusions from the outcome.
The victory has also strengthened the position of the Democracy for the Citizens Party, which is associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, as it seeks to expand its influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Following the by-election, Gachagua declared that the Mt. Kenya region would vote as a united bloc in the next general election, maintaining that the region is determined to chart a new political course.
Political analysts have also described the Ol Kalou contest as one of the most significant by-elections since the 2022 General Election, saying it could influence future political alliances and strategies as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 polls.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Waweru the winner after the closely watched contest, which attracted national attention amid heightened political campaigns and increased security.
As political parties continue to interpret the significance of the results, the Ol Kalou by-election is expected to remain a key reference point in discussions surrounding Kenya’s evolving political landscape and preparations for the next general election.
