Police in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, have launched a homicide investigation after the body of a missing Grade Five pupil was discovered dumped inside a pit latrine, bringing a tragic end to an intensive search that had lasted several days.
The girl, a learner at Lukaya Primary School, was reported missing on Saturday, June 27, 2026, after she failed to return home, prompting family members, residents, local leaders and police officers to mount a coordinated search across the area.
The search came to a heartbreaking conclusion on Tuesday, June 30, when residents discovered her lifeless body inside a pit latrine. Police officers and emergency responders were called to the scene, where the body was retrieved before investigators began processing the area for forensic evidence.
Preliminary examinations conducted at the scene revealed visible injuries on the girl’s body, raising strong suspicions that she was assaulted before being killed. Investigators believe the body may have been dumped in the pit latrine in an attempt to conceal the crime and delay its discovery.
Crime scene detectives documented the scene and collected evidence that will be subjected to forensic analysis as they seek to establish the events leading to the girl’s death and identify those responsible.
