Students and teachers from schools across Mombasa, Kwale and Taita Taveta counties gathered at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) on Friday for the Media Information and Digital Literacy (MIDL) Open Day, organized by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in collaboration with the Students Journalism Clubs in Kenya.

The event brought together senior school learners, journalism club patrons, educators, media practitioners and regional partners for a day of learning, mentorship and practical engagement aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate today’s digital media landscape responsibly.

Speaking during the event, Maureen Mudi, the Media Council of Kenya’s Coast Regional Coordinator, said the Media Information and Digital Literacy Open Day is part of the Council’s efforts to empower learners with the critical thinking and digital skills needed to thrive in an increasingly information-driven world.

She said media and information literacy enables learners to access, analyze, evaluate and create media content responsibly while helping them identify credible sources, verify information before sharing it and combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Mudi encouraged learners to embrace ethical journalism, become responsible digital citizens and take advantage of mentorship opportunities that will help shape their future careers in journalism and communication.

Also speaking during the event, Mombasa Press Club Chairperson Omary Abdullah said exposing students to experienced journalists and media professionals at an early stage is essential in nurturing the next generation of media practitioners.

“Our aim is to empower the future of upcoming journalists by providing them with the knowledge, mentorship and practical exposure they need to thrive in the ever-changing media landscape,” said Abdullah.

Participants attended career talks facilitated by journalists and communication experts, who shared insights into journalism, broadcasting, photography, videography and digital storytelling. They also took part in practical digital literacy sessions focusing on fact-checking, responsible use of social media, identifying credible sources of information and understanding the role of the media in society.

The open day also featured university and media exhibitions, where institutions showcased academic programmes and career opportunities in journalism and communication. Students further participated in an innovation showcase that highlighted creative projects and ideas, while networking sessions enabled learners, teachers, media professionals and institutions to build meaningful connections.

The Media Information and Digital Literacy Open Day forms part of the Media Council of Kenya’s ongoing commitment to strengthening media literacy across the country and promoting responsible digital citizenship. Through such initiatives, the Council continues to empower young people with the knowledge, skills and ethical values needed to make informed decisions and contribute positively to Kenya’s evolving media and digital landscape.
