Mbui Weighs Impeachment Motion Against Ruto, Cites Political Hurdles

NAIROBI, KENYA — Kathiani Member of Parliament and National Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui has revealed he is considering a motion to impeach President William Ruto, though he cautioned that significant political obstacles could derail the process.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, Mbui raised concerns over what he described as the administration’s disregard for constitutional principles and the rule of law.

“The President doesn’t believe in the rule of law and the Constitution,” Mbui stated. “I have contemplated a motion to impeach him, but if I attempt it, it could open a Pandora’s box.”

The lawmaker pointed to what he termed as a major impediment to any impeachment effort—alleged intimidation and influence over Members of Parliament. According to Mbui, some legislators may face pressure to withdraw support, making it difficult to meet the high threshold required to initiate and pass such a motion.

He further argued that the independence of Parliament is under strain, claiming that a number of MPs appear to align more closely with the Executive rather than uphold their oversight role.

Mbui warned that the current political climate could prevent any impeachment attempt from reaching the floor of the House, despite growing criticism of the government from sections of the opposition.

While no formal motion has been tabled, the remarks underscore escalating tensions between the opposition and the Executive, with debates around governance, accountability, and constitutional adherence continuing to dominate the political landscape.
