Detectives in Kiambu County have launched an intensive investigation following the mysterious death of a man whose body was found inside an entertainment joint in Githurai 45 on Friday morning.
The incident has renewed concerns over the increasing number of suspected drink-spiking and robbery cases reported in entertainment venues across Nairobi Metropolitan, with security agencies warning that organized criminal gangs continue to target unsuspecting patrons.
According to preliminary police investigations, the deceased arrived at the entertainment establishment at approximately 5:00 a.m. accompanied by several individuals. Witnesses told investigators that the group spent some time inside the premises before the companions allegedly left the venue, abandoning the man.
Employees at the entertainment joint later discovered the man lying motionless. Upon checking on him, they realized he was unresponsive and immediately alerted police and emergency responders.
Officers from the National Police Service (NPS) arrived at the scene, secured the area and began documenting evidence before detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took over the probe.
The body was later moved to a nearby mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Although investigations remain at an early stage, detectives suspect the deceased may have fallen victim to a drink-spiking scheme, commonly referred to as stupefying, where criminals allegedly lace victims’ drinks with intoxicating substances before robbing them of their valuables.
Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the entertainment establishment and surrounding businesses while also recording statements from staff members, security personnel and patrons who may have interacted with the deceased before his death.
Police are also expected to conduct toxicological examinations to establish whether the man had ingested any incapacitating substances prior to his death.
Authorities have withheld the identity of the deceased until his family is formally notified.
The incident comes amid growing concern over the activities of criminal syndicates operating in entertainment spots across Nairobi and Kiambu counties. According to the DCI, the gangs often target unsuspecting revelers by befriending them before secretly drugging them and stealing money, mobile phones, bank cards and other valuables.
In some reported cases, victims have been abandoned unconscious in isolated areas, while others have suffered severe health complications or lost their lives after being administered unknown substances.
The National Police Service has repeatedly urged members of the public to remain vigilant while socializing by avoiding drinks from strangers, keeping beverages within sight at all times and reporting suspicious behaviour to security personnel.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying the individuals who accompanied the deceased to contact the nearest police station or the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Detectives say investigations are ongoing as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the man’s death and ensure those responsible are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
