Five men, including two drivers and three loaders, have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident that occurred near Mathaarub Centre along the busy Eldoret–Nakuru Highway, just a few kilometres from Burnt Forest.
The fatal incident, which took place on a high-traffic stretch of the highway, involved a trailer and a tractor in a violent head-on collision that left both vehicles extensively damaged and caused a major disruption to transport along the route.
Brake Failure Suspected in Deadly Collision
According to preliminary investigations released by Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani, the accident is believed to have been triggered by a mechanical brake failure on a speeding trailer that was travelling from the Nakuru direction.
Police reports indicate that the trailer, which was moving at high speed before the incident, suddenly lost control after the braking system malfunctioned. The vehicle then veered off its lane and directly collided with an oncoming tractor that was heading in the opposite direction.
The impact of the collision was described as extremely severe, with both vehicles sustaining catastrophic damage upon contact.
Fatal Impact and Immediate Deaths
Authorities confirmed that the force of the crash caused the tractor to overturn multiple times, trapping and fatally crushing the three loaders who were onboard at the time. Both drivers and the three loaders were pronounced dead instantly due to the intensity of the impact.
Emergency responders who arrived at the scene reported that there was little chance of survival for any of the victims given the level of destruction caused by the collision.
Emergency Response and Highway Disruption
Police officers and emergency teams were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Their immediate priority was to secure the crash site, recover the bodies, and manage traffic congestion that quickly escalated into a major gridlock along the busy highway.
Motorists travelling along the Eldoret–Nakuru corridor experienced significant delays as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
The bodies of the five deceased individuals were later retrieved from the scene and transported to a mortuary facility in Eldoret, where they are being preserved pending formal identification and post-mortem examinations.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have since launched further investigations into the mechanical condition of the trailer and whether maintenance lapses may have contributed to the fatal brake failure. Authorities are also expected to conduct inspections on heavy commercial vehicles operating along the highway as part of broader road safety enforcement measures.
