Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has claimed that the outcome of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election demonstrates that President William Ruto can no longer rely on the Mt. Kenya voting bloc to secure victory in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking after the opposition-aligned Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) registered a decisive win in the by-election, Olekina argued that the results reflect a significant political shift in one of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s key support bases.
According to the senator, elections are ultimately determined by numbers, and the Ol Kalou outcome sends a strong signal that the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is losing the voter support that helped propel President Ruto to power in the 2022 General Election.
“The reality of politics is about numbers. What happened in Ol Kalou shows that the political landscape has changed, and that should concern anyone preparing for the 2027 elections,” Olekina said.
He maintained that the by-election exposed what he described as a growing disconnect between the government and voters in the Mt. Kenya region, arguing that many residents are increasingly dissatisfied with the current administration.
Olekina further claimed that the ruling party’s defeat in Nyandarua County illustrates that political influence, state machinery and financial resources are no longer sufficient to guarantee electoral victories in areas that were once considered UDA strongholds.
He said the outcome should serve as a warning to the Kenya Kwanza administration that the political ground in Mt. Kenya has shifted, making the race for the presidency in 2027 more competitive than previously anticipated.
The senator argued that without overwhelming support from the Mt. Kenya region, President Ruto’s path to securing a second term would become significantly more challenging, particularly if opposition parties succeed in forming a united front ahead of the elections.
Olekina’s remarks come in the wake of DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Waweru’s victory over the UDA candidate in the closely watched Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, a contest that attracted national attention and sparked fresh political debate.
The by-election has since been interpreted differently by leaders across the political divide, with opposition politicians describing it as a referendum on the government’s performance, while Kenya Kwanza leaders have maintained that the result does not reflect the broader national political landscape.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is associated with the DCP, has also hailed the outcome as evidence that the Mt. Kenya region is charting a new political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Political analysts have noted that although by-election outcomes do not always predict results in a general election, the Ol Kalou contest has intensified discussions over shifting political alliances and voter sentiment as parties begin positioning themselves for the next national polls.
The victory has injected fresh momentum into opposition campaigns, with leaders expressing confidence that continued cooperation among anti-government parties could reshape Kenya’s political landscape in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.
