KUCCPS Opens 30-Day Inter-Institution Transfer Window for 2026 University Students

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened its inter-institution transfer portal, allowing students placed in non-preferred courses or institutions to apply for transfers ahead of the September 2026 admission cycle.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome announced that the transfer window, which opened following the release of the 2026/2027 placement results on July 8, 2026, will remain accessible for 30 days, an extension from the previous two-week application period.

The move follows a government policy directive aimed at giving students more time to review their placement results and make informed decisions about their academic and career paths before reporting to their respective institutions.

The transfer process will be conducted entirely online through the KUCCPS Student Portal, where applicants can seek to change their university, course or both, subject to the placement guidelines.

To begin the process, students are required to log into the KUCCPS portal and select the Transfer Application option before choosing their preferred institution or programme.

Once an application is submitted, the receiving institution will first review it to determine whether the applicant meets the minimum admission requirements for the selected course. If approved, the application is forwarded to the releasing institution, which must formally endorse the student’s transfer.

After both institutions grant their approval, KUCCPS will conduct a final verification before issuing an official transfer letter through the student portal. Applicants will then be required to download the letter and present it to their new institution to receive updated admission and reporting instructions.

Dr. Wahome emphasized that all transfer requests must comply with the placement criteria used during the 2026/2027 placement exercise.

Students seeking to transfer must have attained the required weighted cluster points for their preferred programme and satisfy all minimum subject requirements prescribed for the course, including professional qualifications where applicable.

In addition, approval will depend on the availability of vacant slots at the receiving institution, meaning eligible applicants may still be unsuccessful if programmes have reached their admission capacity.

KUCCPS also reminded applicants that each transfer request attracts a non-refundable processing fee of KSh1,000, payable through the government’s eCitizen platform before the application can be processed.

The placement agency has encouraged students to carefully evaluate their career interests and programme choices before submitting transfer requests, noting that the extended application period is intended to support better career alignment and informed decision-making.

The annual inter-institution transfer exercise provides students with an opportunity to pursue programmes that better match their academic qualifications, career aspirations and personal preferences while ensuring that universities and colleges maintain admission standards and programme capacities.

Students have until the close of the 30-day application window to submit their requests through the KUCCPS portal before the September 2026 intake commences.
