Kioni Rejects Boardroom Selection of Opposition Flagbearer, Calls for Public Role in 2027 Race

Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has dismissed the idea of selecting the opposition’s 2027 presidential flagbearer through closed-door negotiations, insisting that the coalition’s candidate must emerge through a transparent process involving ordinary Kenyans.

Speaking on the ongoing discussions within the united opposition alliance, Kioni said neither former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i nor Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should be handed the presidential ticket solely through agreements among political leaders.

“We are looking for public leadership, not family leadership, and the people of Kenya should be involved throughout the process,” Kioni said.

His remarks come as opposition parties continue consultations aimed at forging a united front ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several senior leaders being mentioned as possible presidential contenders.

Kioni argued that the opposition’s credibility would depend on its commitment to democratic principles, maintaining that the eventual flagbearer should be subjected to a public vetting process rather than being chosen by a small group of coalition leaders.

According to the Jubilee Secretary General, a candidate selected through broad public participation would be better placed to command national support and effectively challenge the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the next election.

While acknowledging that both Matiang’i and Kalonzo are experienced political leaders with significant support bases, Kioni cautioned against assuming that prominence alone should determine the coalition’s presidential nominee.

He said a boardroom decision could alienate grassroots supporters and undermine the opposition’s efforts to present itself as a democratic alternative to the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Kioni further argued that the opposition should distinguish itself by embracing openness, accountability and inclusive decision-making, rather than relying on elite political negotiations or what he described as insular leadership arrangements.

The debate over the coalition’s presidential candidate has intensified as opposition parties seek to consolidate support and avoid internal divisions before the official campaign period begins. Political analysts have noted that agreeing on a transparent nomination framework will be crucial to maintaining unity among the coalition’s constituent parties.

Jubilee has in recent weeks stepped up grassroots mobilisation under the leadership of Fred Matiang’i, who has been conducting consultative meetings and membership drives across the country as part of the party’s efforts to rebuild its structures ahead of the 2027 polls.

The opposition has repeatedly stated its intention to field a single presidential candidate against the ruling alliance, although leaders have yet to announce the mechanism that will be used to identify the coalition’s flagbearer.

Kioni’s remarks underscore the growing debate within the opposition over how to balance political consensus with public participation as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather pace.
