KAMPALA, UGANDA — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former President Uhuru Kenyatta today shared lighthearted moments during the inauguration ceremony of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, drawing widespread attention across the region.

The two Kenyan leaders, often viewed as representing opposing sides of Kenya’s political landscape, were seen laughing and engaging in close conversation at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

Photos and videos of the interaction quickly spread across social media platforms, with many Kenyans describing the moment as a show of political maturity and regional statesmanship.

Deputy President Kindiki attended the ceremony on behalf of President William Ruto, who remained in Nairobi to oversee the ongoing Africa Forward Summit.

Former President Kenyatta, on the other hand, attended the event in his role as a regional peace envoy and senior statesman within the East African diplomatic space.

The warm public interaction stood in sharp contrast to the tense political rhetoric that has recently characterized relations between allies of the current administration and Kenyatta’s political camp.

For many observers, the images symbolized the possibility of dialogue and cooperation despite domestic political divisions.

Some social media users initially questioned the authenticity of the photos, speculating that they may have been artificially generated due to the rarity of public interactions between the two leaders. However, official government communication channels later confirmed the meeting.

President Museveni’s inauguration ceremony, marking the beginning of his seventh term in office, attracted several regional leaders and dignitaries, including South Sudan President Salva Kiir and Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi.

Despite the high-profile attendance, much of the Kenyan attention remained focused on the interaction between Kindiki and Kenyatta, which many interpreted as a rare moment of unity within Kenya’s political establishment.

Diplomatic sources indicated that the two leaders also held a brief private discussion on regional peace and security matters, reinforcing Kenya’s commitment to presenting a united front on key foreign policy issues.
